Peter's new album "Storybook" will be out in four days time in Sweden.

25 October 2004

At the official site, Peter has said a little more about the new album. It will not just be songs from musicals but also the timeless classics. He mentions that it will contain songs from composers like Michel Legrand, Charles Aznavour, Stephen Sondheim, Leonard Bernstein and Kander & Ebb. And songs that have been previously performed by Tom Jones and Elvis Presley.

Ginza has reported the following song list.

  1. Nature Boy

  4. The Windmills Of Your Mind
  5. Losing My Mind
  6. I Don't Care Much
  7. I Who Have Nothing

Going on what was said at Julie's website, the duet is probably with her (see entry under 5 October).

CDON is listing both a standard version of the album and a digipack version, both out on the same day.

It has been rumoured that Peter may perform a song at Melodifestivalen 2005 called "Med Hjärtats Egen Ord".  It is said that the song will either be performed by Peter or Tommy Körberg. Melodifestivalen is the Swedish heats to decide which song will represent Sweden at Eurovision.

Another four Christmas concerts with Peter as special guest have been announced by Sissel. Thanks to Bror for the following information.

5 December - Trondheim Spektrum, Trondheim - 6:00pm
17 December - Hjertnes Kulturhus, Sandefjord - 6:00pm

21 October 2004

Peter is releasing a new album called "Storybook" on 10 November. He says the following at the official site.

It is something quite special to be able to sing with a symphony orchestra... Since working on "Kristina från Duvemåla" and my album "Personliga val", I have longed for the possibility to collaborate with a big orchestra again. Now the chance has come. This time with Sweden's national orchestra, Göteborg's Symphony Orchestra.

On this album I have chosen to record timeless songs with strong melodies and lyrics that tell a story - songs with staying power, songs that you remember - arranged by some of Scandinavia's most skillful arrangers.

A tracklisting has not been revealed yet but Expressen says that the album will contain songs by Sondheim, Bernstein, Legrand and Kander & Ebb. It is believed that the album will be in English.

The official site is offering people the chance to pre-book a signed copy of the album but you must live in Sweden to take advantage of this offer.

On 17 November, a new DVD is being released called "Jag kommer hem igen till jul - Live på Cirkus". Unlike last year's Christmas DVD, this one contains an actual concert filmed at Cirkus in Stockholm last year. No other details are known at this stage.

Thanks to Bror, it can now be revealed that Peter will be guesting at seven of Sissel's Christmas concerts in Norway.

3 December - Oslo Spektrum, Oslo - 7:30pm
4 December - Letohallen, Eidsvoll - 7:30pm
11 December - Grieghallen, Bergen - 4:30pm
11 December - Grieghallen, Bergen - 7:00pm
12 December - Stavanger Konserthus, Stavanger - 6:00pm
12 December - Stavanger Konserthus, Stavanger - 8:30pm
13 December - Stavanger Konserthus, Stavanger - 7:30pm

17 October 2004

Further to the previous news item (dated 9 October), Peter will also be making guest appearances at Sissel's Christmas concerts in Bergen on 11 December and Stavanger on 12 December. Apparently, Sissel will return the favour by appearing at Peter's concert in Stockholm on 19 November. Thanks to Mia for this news.

Here are a few shots from Peter's autumn tour which is almost over. The concert has continued to get very good reviews. Click on the thumbnails to see a larger version.

Peter will be making a special guest appearance at Sissel Kyrkjebø's Christmas concert on 3 December in Oslo. Peter and Sissel recorded the duet "Gå inte förbi" that was released last Christmas. For more information about the concert, check Oslo Spektrum's website. Thanks to Siv for the information.

5 October 2004

According to Julie's website, Peter asked Julie if she would sing a duet on his new album. She agreed on the condition that he would sing on her album which is how "Here And Now" came about. So it appears that Julie will be singing with Peter on his new album - maybe this is the album that according to Aftonbladet will be released in November (see news item under 21 August 2004 below).

"Here And Now" has been getting airplay in Denmark.

Thanks to Jan Bach for the above news.

Peter live on stage

Peter's concert tour is underway and getting very good reviews. Aftonbladet gave the concert four stars and raved about Peter's voice - "Jöback's voice has a powerful energy".

1 October 2004

A bit more news about Peter's duet with Julie.

Peter is listed as one of the songwriters on "Here And Now". The song is credited to Julie Berthelsen/Moh Denebi/Peter Jöback/Mats Berntoft.

You can hear a short clip from the song at Julie's website www.julie.gl. Click on MUSIK on the top menu bar and scroll down until you get to the song list. Click on PLAY to hear the clip. If you click on TEKST, you can read the lyrics.

www.ginza.se is listing a new DVD called "Julkonsert" to be released on 10 November. It is not clear if this is a reissue of last years Christmas DVD or a totally new release. It is known that Peter's concert at Cirkus in December last year was filmed and this may be what is actually on the DVD. www.discshop.se also mentions the new DVD and gives a release date of 3 November.

The production company Produktionsbolaget is reporting on its site that they will be putting the finishing touches to a "DVD with Peter Jöback" on 30 November.

Fotbollsfeber CD cover     Blå Ballader Vol 3 CD cover

Peter has appeared on two new compilation CDs in Sweden. The first CD "Fotbollsfeber" (Football Fever) is of football-related songs and features "More Than A Game" a duet with Peter and Towe that was originally released in 1992. It was the official song for the 1992 European Football Championships.

The album is currently sitting at number 16 on the charts released today.

The Discography page has been updated.

15 May 2004

Peter's new album is currently sitting at number one on the Swedish album charts. The album debuted at number two and then moved to number one the following week, dislodging Agnetha Fältskog's comeback album.

Congratulations Peter.

The single debuted at number 26 the week before the album came out and then dropped to number 52. Maybe not that surprising considering the single only has one track which is also on the album.

"Du har förlorat mer än jag" has entered the Svensktoppen chart at number 15.

3 May 2004

1 May 2004

The following is a translation of an article that appeared in Aftonbladet last week:

- I AM SO GLAD THAT I DID IT

Peter Jöback about his decision to come out as a homosexual.

Broken relationships, his father's death, family hostilities and searching for himself.

In an openhearted interview, Peter Jöback now tells the truth.

I have carried so much inside me, it is wonderful to come clean, he says to Aftonbladet.

Next week, "Det här är platsen" is released.

Peter Jöback's new solo album is his most honest ever.

- I have been busy for so long that I wanted to take the step and tell my story.

In confidential conversations with celebrated songwriters Mauro Scocco, Nicklas Frisk and Andreas Mattson, Peter Jöback has opened up.

The result is deeply personal lyrics - right down to the last syllable.

- Mauro wrote the first song "Gör det nu" (Do it now), which is about a relationship that had ended, and I was extremely bitter. He wrote a lyric which was me to a t.

"Like a family"

Lars Halapi has produced and the musicians have followed Peter Jöback since the Christmas tours.

The foundation for the album was laid in the Trosa archipelago.

- We have been like a family, everyone is involved.

When work on the record was over Peter Jöback had a tough time.

- I was in a depression all of last year and was feeling quite low when I met Mauro. But to be able to come to terms with things that one has gone through, one must allow oneself to be down. So I took a year and just let it all out, I partied and travelled overseas. I was just Peter. And it was really great.

You came out on the program "Sen kväll med Luuk". How have the weeks after that been?

- It was really great to do it, and in my own words. No one can misquote me.

- Some believe that I used to hide myself, that I didn't stand for who I am. But I just haven't wanted to talk about my private life. I think it is unsexy. I don't want to know everything about everyone else.

- I have just found myself too. One must take things at their own pace, and I must be able to choose myself when I talk about such a huge personal thing.

The rumour-mill and gossip magazine articles, how has it looked to you?

- Towards the end, it was almost ridiculous. Every time I did an interview, I would see that this person would be asked by their boss to ask me if I was gay or not.

"Can believe what they like"

There was a rumour about you and a well-known Swede who lived overseas.

- I don't want to comment on the tabloid press. It has been hugely varied. People can believe what they like. It is history now, says Peter Jöback with a smile.

One of the songs on the album describes how you moved away from home when you were 15 years old.

- I grew up in a large villa in Täby, 13 rooms and a pool. Dad wanted us to have it good, but in the end it didn't work out any longer and they were forced to sell.

30 April 2004

Peter's single "Du har förlorat mer än jag" entered the Swedish charts at number 26.

Both Aftonbladet and Expressen have written glowing reviews of Peter's album and both have given the album 4 out of 5.

Aftonbladet - "This is a triumph! Peter Jöback has become a real artist."

Expressen - "He has made the best album in Swedish since Gessle's 'Mazarin'. And has perfectly found his own natural place in Swedish pop heaven."

27 April 2004

Peter will be signing copies of his new album at Åhlens City in Stockholm at 17:30 this Thursday 29 April.

It appears that the new album will be a digi-pack format and the CD will allow access to exclusive bonus material on the internet.

The duet on the album, "Jag bär dig" with Sara Isaksson, is a cover version of "Don't Give Up" by Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush. Thomas Andersson Wij wrote the Swedish lyrics.

26 April 2004

Peter performed two songs on TV-Huset - his new single "Du har förlorat mer än jag" and a Swedish version of the John Hiatt song "Have A Little Faith In Me".

23 April 2004

The official site reports that Peter will be performing songs from his new album live on the television show TV-Huset this Sunday, 25 April on SVT 1 at 6:30pm.

The Swedish newspaper Norrköpings Tidningar has published a profile on composer Bosse Wastesson. Bosse is working on two musicals and it is reported that Peter is involved in both of them.

The first to see the light of day will be "Gerda". An album will be released this autumn and Peter will be one of the artists contributing.

The second has been in the pipeline for quite a few years now. "Gösta Berlings saga" is based on the first novel by famous Swedish author Selma Lageröf. Peter recorded a song from this project "En sång om oss" back in 1997. In 1999, Aftonbladet revealed that Peter was involved in the project and would have the starring role (see news page under 11 August 1999). Norrköpings Tidningar reports that nothing is happening just but it has been decided along with Ture Rangström (lyric writer) and Peter Jöback to work towards staging a concert version of the show.

Thanks to Siv for the link to the article in Norrköpings Tidningar.

22 April 2004

Niclas Frisk and Andreas Mattsson have also written "Du har förlorat mer än jag", the first single from the album.

Peter with Kristian Luuk

Peter has made a splash in Sweden but this time not for his music. Last night on TV4's talk show, "Sen kväll med Luuk", he came out as being gay.

Normally, here at the website, I concentrate on Peter's creative life as a singer and actor. His private life is just that - private. There have been rumours in the press prior to now and I have chosen not to report them out of respect to Peter. I am making an exception here for two reasons. Firstly, it is not idle gossip. Peter himself chose to reveal this information in a non-threatening way. Secondly, it relates to a song on his new album.

I applaud Peter for making this choice. It is never an easy one to make. It has been heartening that Peter's fans have been supportive and think no less of him. I am sure that Peter will be going from strength to strength professionally and this was the right decision for him to make. We are all proud of him.

On the talk show, Peter talked to Kristian Luuk about his new album. Peter talked about how personal this album is for him and how he worked very closely with the songwriting team. He revealed that one of the songs is about the relationship with his father who died 10 years ago.  A snippet from the title song "Det här är platsen" was played.

The following article is from QX, a Swedish gay newspaper and has a transcript.

PETER JÖBACK HAS COME OUT

On Friday evening's program of "Sen kväll med Luuk", Peter Jöback announced that he is gay.

It has been rumoured and talked about for many years. But now it's finally out in the open. Peter Jöback is gay. When Peter was a guest with Luuk on Friday evening, he talked about what everyone's has been talking about for several years.

Here is an extract from the interview.

Luuk: One of the songs on your new record is called "Ingen skyldighet" (No obligation). Can you tell us a little about it?

Jöback: It's a kind of commentary on everything that has been written about me. About all the gossip. I have never commented on what has been said so people have perhaps got the impression that I don't stand for who I am.

Luuk: Yes, it has been speculated about whether you like guys or like girls.

Jöback: I place a lot of importance on my privacy. I have been fascinated by a certain type of journalist who considers that there is some kind of obligation by us artists to tell everything. And it shouldn't make any difference for me if I should live with a woman or a man.  I should have just as much privacy as anyone.

Luuk: But you have been with guys?

Jöback: Yes, definitely.

Luuk: But you have never talked about this before?

Jöback: No, because I haven't wanted to. I haven't thought it important.

Luuk: Why have you chosen to come out with this now?

Jöback: Well, you asked and I answered, and I said yes. (laughs)

Luuk: Why has it been hard to talk about this earlier?

Jöback: It hasn't been hard. I am protective of my privacy. I have a life outside of my job. And I want people to listen to my music. That is the most important thing.

Luuk: Has it seemed like this question about whether you are gay or not has limited you as an artist?

Jöback: Definitely not.

Luuk: So you haven't thought "what if they won't buy my records now that I have come out"?

Jöback: No, actually not.

Luuk: But doesn't it feel good to have said it, now we can end all the speculations?

Jöback: Yes, but I've said it now. I will probably not talk about it anymore.

Luuk: I think it was brave and good that you said it.

article by Anders Öhrman for QX
translated by Grant Whittingham

Swedish tabloids Expressen and Aftonbladet have reported on Peter's revelation. Expressen published an open letter from Peter.

This is the most personal album I have done. Mauro, Niclas, Andreas and Lars Halapi have given me the tools to talk about my thoughts and stories in a wonderful way. I am comfortable in myself and it would be strange for me to talk about the album without commenting on all the speculations that have been around. I have been thinking about this decision for a long time and now I have made the decision, it feels good and the right thing to do.

In a further article in Expressen, it is revealed that other songs contain personal details. "I talked about a relationship that broke up and I was terribly upset by this person. So Mauro went home and wrote a song called "Gör det nu" (Do it now)."

Aftonbladet have the lyrics to the song referred to in the interview and I have translated the lyrics below. The song is written by Mauro Scocco.

Ingen skyldighet

Kan du gissa min hemlighet? Det kanske du kan. Vem jag egentligen är, är det som är intressant. Ska jag vara en gåta? Något att tala om. Din lilla uppgift, något att bry sig om.
No obligation

Can you guess my secret? Perhaps you can. Who I really am, is it someone who is interesting? Will I be a mystery? Someone to talk about? Your little task, someone to worry about.
Nej, nej. Jag spelar inte det spelet. Häng inte allt det där runt min hals. Nej nej. Det finns ingen bruksanvisning. Ingen skyldighet att förklara någonting igen. No, no. I'm not playing a role. Don't hang all of this around my neck. No, no. There are no instructions. No obligation to explain anything again.
Vill du vara mig nära? Vill du vara min vän? Vill du sitta kvar när alla andra gått hem? Vill du ha detaljer? Små saker att dela ut. Som gör det intressant i någon minut. Do you want to be near me? Do you want to be my friend? Do you still want to be around when everyone else has gone home? Do you want the details? Small things to share around. Which make it interesting any minute now.
Nej, nej. Jag spelar inte det spelet. Häng inte allt det där runt min hals. Nej, nej. Det finns ingen bruksanvisning. Ingen skyldighet att förklara någonting igen. No, no. I'm not playing a role. Don't hang all of this around my neck. No, no. There are no instructions. No obligation to explain anything again.
Så kom inte hit. Och gör min värld mindre. Varje människa är ett mirakel. Varje hjärta som brinner. So don't come here. And make my world smaller. Every person is a miracle. Every heart which burns.
Nej, nej. Jag spelar inte det spelet. Häng inte allt det där runt min hals. Nej, nej. Det finns ingen bruksanvisning. Ingen skyldighet att förklara någonting alls. No, no. I'm not playing a role. Don't hang all of this around my neck. No, no. There are no instructions. No obligation to explain anything at all.

Here is a translation of the press release about the new album from the official site.

PETER JÖBACK - NEW STUDIO ALBUM 28 APRIL

Peter Jöback and producer Lars Halapi worked together on Peter's much-celebrated Christmas album "Jag kommer hem igen till jul". The album came out in 2002 and to date has sold double platinum in Sweden and 60,000 copies in Norway. Peter, Lars and the band have also done two successful Christmas concert tours.

Peter Jöback is now continuing to develop the musical feeling that he found in his collaboration with Lars. The result of this creative meeting is the album "Det här är platsen" (This is the place) - a truly personal album where a small group of musicians and songwriters worked long and closely with Peter.

Niclas Frisk, Andreas Mattson, Mauro Scocco and Tomas Andersson Wij have written the lyrics and the music in consultation with Peter.

Lars Halapi, Peter Korhonen, Thomas Axelsson and Robert Qvarfort play on all the songs. Joakim Milder has written the string arrangements and Lars Halapi together with Per "Texas" Johansson are responsible for the brass arrangements.

"To be able to find my own musical expression together with musicians live in the studio is a fantastic experience. Likewise, to work so closely with songwriters so that their words become mine.

"These are my thoughts and stories that have been given life through the most inspiring collaboration I have experienced."

Translated by Grant Whittingham.

31 March 2004

Peter will release a new album on 28 April called "Det här är platsen" (This is the place). As you can probably tell from the title, the album is in Swedish and Peter has worked with the same team as his very successful Christmas album. There will be a single released two weeks before the album on 14 April. The single is called "Du har förlorat mer än jag" (You have lost more than me).

Aftonbladet has reported about the album and a translation appears below.

JÖBACK RELEASES NEW STUDIO ALBUM

Mauro Scocco, Niclas Frisk and Andreas Mattson have written the songs for his comeback.

The most personal album ever.

Created by Sweden's heavyweights.

- A fantastic feeling, says Peter Jöback about the new album "Det här är platsen".

The team arrangement has played a major part in the creation of the album.

Mauro Scocco, Niclas Frisk, Andreas Mattson and Tomas Andersson Wij are the men behind Peter Jöback's new album.

Today, Aftonbladet can - as the first newspaper - talk about "Det här är platsen", which is released in a month's time.

All eleven songs were written in close collaboration with Peter Jöback.

- These are my thoughts and stories that have been given life through the most inspiring collaboration I have experienced, says Peter Jöback.

Experienced artists.

It is a team of experienced and celebrated musicians that Jöback has surrounded himself with. Frisk and Mattson write music for Sweden's biggest artists and in the past have worked with the pop groups Atomic Swing, Popsicle and Sweet Chariots.

Tomas Andersson Wij was acknowledged last winter for the single "Blues från Sverige" and Mauro Scocco hardly needs any introduction.

Back in 2002, Peter Jöback started to work with Scocco, Frisk, Mattson and producer Lars Halapi. The result was the Christmas album "Jag kommer hem igen till jul", which to date has sold double platinum in Sweden and 60,000 copies in Norway. The new album continues the partnership.

Peter Jöback himself describes the album as his most personal ever.

Tour on the horizon?

- It has been fantastic to get to work with Lars and the band, and with Niclas, Andreas and Mauro. They have been so engaging and have given me the tools to connect my thoughts and stories, says Peter Jöback.

Peter's calendar for the year is really filling up with this new album. Aftonbladet has already told about the big concerts which Jöback will give at Scandinavium and Globen this autumn.

Whether "Det här är platsen" will be followed up with a tour is currently unclear, but discussions are taking place.

Yesterday, Peter appeared with Pernilla Wahlgren in a schlager concert held in Sandviken, Sweden.

Peter fan, Tina Björklund took the following pictures and has kindly given her permission for them to be used on the site. Click on the thumbnail to view a larger version.

There were about 2,000 people at the concert of all ages. The concert went down well with the audience and Peter and Pernilla seemed to have a lot of fun on stage.

The music spanned a 70 year period. Naturally, Peter sang his classic hit "Guldet blev till sand". He also sang "Vinden i själ", "Jennie Jennie" and "En gång i Stockholm". He sang two duets with Pernilla - "Nygammal vals" and "Fritiof och Carmencita". With the latter song, Peter and Pernilla danced the tango on stage.

Peter also joined in on a medley of Svensktoppen hits.

19 March 2004

Tickets have just gone on sale for two very special concerts. Peter will be headlining a show called "Storybook", a collection of specially chosen songs from film, stage and cabaret. He will be backed by the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra.

17 November - Scandinavium, Göteborg (Gothenburg)
19 November - Globen, Stockholm

Following is my translation of the press release at the official site:

PETER JOINS THE GOTHENBURG SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA IN TWO CONCERTS

When Peter and Sweden's nation orchestra, the Gothenburg Symphony, toured with "Kristina från Duvemåla", there was a strong wish from both parties to find some other musical project. In June last year, a collaboration was started when Peter guested with the orchestra in the Gothenburg Concert Hall with two concerts of music from Stephen Sondheim and Leonard Bernstein.

And now...

Peter Jöback and the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra (GSO) will take a new musical step together. Together they will give two unique concerts at the Scandinavium in Gothenburg on 17 November and at Globen in Stockholm on 19 November. Tickets are released today.

Peter and the GSO have together gone through a huge list of the world's biggest songs and picked their own personal choices with songs from film and stage, musicals and cabaret. Surprising classic - and naturally, songs from Peter's own repertoire. They will be performed by Peter and the 100-strong Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra conducted by Nick Davies.

"This is one of my musical dreams which will be fulfilled," says Peter Jöback. "To pick out songs that I love to sing, songs that have inspired me and which have been with me for many years. And to get to do them with such an enormous orchestra - it feels fantastic."

Tickets cost 350kr plus a service fee. Tickets are being sold through the box offices at Scandinavium, Gothenburg (031-81 10 20) and Globen, Stockholm (077-131 00 00 or www.globearenas.se).

Tickets are also on sale through Biljettdirekt Ticnet 077-170 70 70, www.ticnet.se and ATG-ombud.

Peter was interviewed by Aftonbladet about the upcoming concerts. He realises that it is a risk - "We are taking a chance and hoping that it works," he said. "It will be fun to stick my neck out a bit."

Peter went on to say that "It will be fantastic to sing with such a big orchestra - it will be powerful. The  songs will be big songs with lyrics that tell a story. A lot of emotion."

Peter has already started to choose the songs. Anything from Elvis and Tom Jones to songs from the musicals "Kristina" and "Miss Saigon". Maybe even songs from his own albums.

The Aftonbladet article goes on to reveal that there will not be any Christmas concerts this year. Peter is quoted as saying that fans will be console themselves with a new DVD filmed at the two shows held in Cirkus. It will also include interviews and bonus material.

Tickets for both concerts are now on sale. They can be booked online at www.ticnet.se

Schlager concert poster

On 25 March 2004, Peter will be appearing in concert with Pernilla Wahlgren, singing schlager songs from over the years including songs from Jules Sylvain, Kaj Gullmar, Tore Ehrling and ABBA. The concert will be held in Sandviken and appears to be a one-off.

"Jag kommer hem igen till jul" was number 21 on the best-selling album chart for 2003.

Peter's official site reports that he has started working on his new album. No further details at this stage, although it was reported in the Swedish media last year as being a pop album in Swedish.

Peter's Christmas album also sold well in Norway, reaching number 4 on the album charts and selling over 50,000 copies. Peter has been awarded his first Norwegian platinum disc.
